I am a Ph.D. Candidate at New York University (NYU). In my research, I investigate how states can legitimately coerce citizens when there is disagreement about the status of democracy itself. I argue this requires citizens to have robust exit options (e.g. subsidized emigration, or the right of secession). Relatedly, I am interested in how states can be stable given the existence of antidemocratic (or “unreasonable”) citizens.
